Accidental Melancholy

Accidental Melancholy

Småland, Sweden

In December 2018, I took a two day visit to Skillingaryd, Småland. The idea was to document the many factories involved in the David design production. It was a great opportunity for me to meet the characters involved in the process, hear their stories and generally obtain an understanding of the knowledge and craftmanship that goes into bringing the fantastic designs and ideas to fruition.

It was a long drive from Stockholm and as expected, the weather was pretty dismal … wet, cold and grey skies.

However, as I travelled between the various locations, I was greeted with beautiful landscapes, so felt inclined to keep stopping to photograph the scenery. During the many appointments, I would be recommended places to go ‘via’ on the way to the next destination. I was told stories about an old tree I ‘definitely should see’. I did start to wonder if this was some kind of joke with the English guy, but eventually I found the tree after asking several farmers!

Småland is incredibly beautiful in the Summer, I already realised that, but these harsh weather conditions just seemed to make the landscape so poetically melancholic, so the ‘accidental exhibition’ of images you see here were actually taken in the travel time between the locations.

Apologies for being late for my appointments, but hopefully this explains why.
