Messengers

Messengers

The messenger project documents Stockholm’s cycle couriers and the tight-knit community they form. The project began in winter 2018, photographing riders and their bikes during ten-minute breaks in their working day.

Working through harsh weather and covering 50–100 kilometres a day, the riders measure their time in the job in winters, not years. Their bikes reflect both their individuality and the city's demands.

Through these portraits, I explore a subculture shaped by resilience, independence and mutual support. The project records people, place, and a chosen way of life. It is also an homage to the simple bicycle.

With support from Stiftelsen Längmanska kulturfonden, I received funds to develop the project into the book titled Shoot the Messenger, published in March 2024.
